Why some kirri scents come in our signature bottleUpdated a few seconds ago

Our ten most-loved scents each have their own custom label and packaging. Every other scent, from seasonal releases to limited small batches, comes in our signature bottle, with the word "signature" printed straight onto the glass.

The fragrance inside is exactly the same. Same oils, same blending, same team in Melbourne. Only the outside changes, and that choice is the reason we can keep making smaller, more unusual scents at all.

Where we started

When kirri first began, every scent had its own label. Every seasonal blend. Every limited run. We loved the look of it.

Behind the scenes it was a different story. Some seasonal scents sold only a small number of bottles before the season ended. Each one still needed its own artwork, proofing, print run and storage. When a scent retired, its leftover labels went into a box and stayed there.

The real cost of a label for every scent

Custom packaging doesn't get cheaper just because a batch is small. Setting up a print run for a scent we make in small numbers costs almost as much as one for a bestseller. Print suppliers also have minimum order quantities, so we often ordered far more labels than we'd ever use.

Then there's time. Every hour spent on artwork and print approvals for a short-lived scent was an hour not spent creating the next one.

For a small Australian brand, that adds up quickly. We had two options. Cut the range back to bestsellers only, or find a smarter way to package our small runs.

We chose the second.

How we do it now

• Top 10 scents: custom labels and packaging, because we make them in volumes that justify it
• Everything else: our signature bottle, with "signature" printed on the glass, used across seasonal, limited edition and small-batch scents

Small runs are worth protecting

Some of our favourite scents will never be bestsellers. They're seasonal, or a little unexpected, or loved by a smaller group of people who really love them.

The signature bottle is how those scents get to exist. It keeps kirri financially healthy enough to take creative risks, and it means your favourite limited blend is more likely to come back next year.
